I have two simple questions for you. They're very easy. In fact each only requires a one word answer. So, fill in the blank with one word ending with an "s" for each question. I'll give you a sample below.
Ready? Here goes.
Question 1: Scripture _________s
Example: Scripture teaches. Okay, now that you have the hang of it, rattle off a few dozen one word ansers. Go ahead. It's a no-brainer!
Now for Question 2: Art _________s
You know the routine. Lay down a bunch of answers. Now compare your answers for each question and see how many are interchangeable. Surprised?
Let me give you a little assistance. Here are some of the descriptive words I would use.
Encourages, equips, motivates, reveals, speaks, convicts, magnifies, illumines, exhalts, exposes, testifies, exhorts, expresses, frees, satisfies, shapes, fills, calms, evokes, challenges, invades, restores, excites, confronts, captivates, persuades, enriches, heals...
Do I need to go on? I hope by now you get my point. I have witnessed how Scripture and great art do many of these things. Scripture with all of its many stories, psalms, songs, poetry, and prose is a work of Art given to us by the Creator. And although the art of mankind can never reach the perfectiion of the Word, the art of men and women can also be given by inspiration of the Creator. (You don't have to remind me that much art has been used in a perverse way.)
The next time you read the Bible or view a great work of art, I hope you look beyond what you see. There may be more than what meets the eye.
